Hoops for ‘Building with the Boyces a success

by: Sandy Dickson

Another successful fundraiser was held Saturday July 3 in the form of Hoops and Dreams. Beach Bible Church, hosted a chance for basketball players to shoot free throws and help a wonderful cause at the same time. A total of $5,374 was raised to help Stefanie and Justin Boyce raise the money toward the building of a one-story house necessary to accommodate the progressive physical needs their two small children, both of whom have been diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome. The disease, which manifests at about age 2, steadily progresses with growing debilitations to include loss of motor skills and ultimately the need for wheel chair and feeding tube. These patients usually don’t live very far into their teens.

A series of fundraisers have already taken place to help the Boyce family raise the money needed to build a house modified for the growing needs of the Boyce’s two children: Jayden, now age 4 and Brooklyn, not quite a year-old.

Free throw shooters were invited to print sponsor sheets from the buildwiththeboyces.com web site, but many simply showed up and started shooting baskets. At this 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. event, there was no set fee; people were free to give as they wished, but they gave generously and also purchased from the on site bake sale.

Forty-nine shooters participated. Children ages 7 and under were allowed 15 free throws,

  • Ages 8 to 11: 50 free throws
  • Ages 12 to adult – 100 free throws.

Scores were kept so that the top three winners in each age group could be awarded very nice donated prizes. Pool passes, Jordan bags, back packs, golf packs, Maui Jim sun glasses were only a few.
